Robert Skipwith was born in Amelia County, Va. and spent his life in Goochland County, Va., Richmond, Va. and Powhatan County, Va. He apparently attended the University of Virginia and worked from 1840-1846 on the James River and Kanawha Canal; and in 1847 in Pennsylvania. Robert Skipwith married Janes Rolfe Bolling and moved to "Bolling Hall," Goochland County, Va. where they lived until her death in 1867.
